Mediation fees

In the table below we list information about all our services and costs. In addition to this, the following terms apply:

  1. Clients are each responsible for their own fees and are invoiced separately, unless specifically agreed otherwise.
  2. Fees are due at the time of booking. Your appointment will not be confirmed until payment is made. Cancellation fees apply, as per our policy below.
  3. Document fees are due in advance of your mediator starting work on the documents.
  4. Able Mediation is a provider of the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme. We will tell you if you are eligible and apply for this on your behalf. You can read more about this here.
  5. We do not provide Legal Aid. However, our mediators will be able to help you understand if you are eligible for this and sign-post you to a provider where relevant.
  6. We try our best to keep our fees as cost-effective as possible. We review our fees annually, with new rates taking effect on 1st April where applicable. We will let you know in advance of any increases to your fees.
  7. We currently accept payment by bank transfer only. Bank details are provided either on our invoice to you, and/or by text, to avoid the danger of phishing emails.

Additional charges

We do not routinely charge for telephone calls, letters or other administrative duties outside of meeting times.

However, further fees may be charged if the mediator is required to do considerable work in addition to normal case preparation.

This may include reading reports, extraordinary case preparation or consultation with other professionals outside of session times. Generally, additional time will be charged by the hour at the same rate as the mediations session fee.

We will always inform you before doing the work, if we believe an extra charge will be payable.

Family Mediation Voucher Scheme

Able Mediation is a provider of the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme. This is a government initiative designed to encourage separating couples to use mediation instead of going to court. It offers up to £500 towards the cost of mediation to families that are mediating about children. It is available to all those who meet this criteria and is not means tested.

Potential costs of proceeding to court

Because solicitor’s fees vary greatly it is difficult to estimate how much court proceedings could cost.

However, as a guide, information from Money Helper estimates the cost of court proceedings that include solicitors and/or barristers at £10,000 - £15,000 per person, per application for simple matters, or £25,000 - £30,000 for person for contested hearings.

Therefore, if you needed help from the court to make decisions about both children and finances, you would need to pay these fees twice to account for two separate applications on two different legal matters.
